According to the Disney-owned sports channel’s senior vice-president for technology Chuck Pagano: ‘I bet you in three years every new set will have 3D embedded into it.’

Speaking about this summer’s World Cup, which is to be covered by ESPN in 3D, he added: ‘You have to look at quality control in a different manner. You have to get all the systems to work (together), and this includes people systems. That is what we are focusing on.’

His comments could send ripples through the digital signage market, which has already been name-checked by Samsung and Philips as an area in which 3D could take off.

Sony, meanwhile, has won an order from broadcaster BSkyB to kit out its 3D outside broadcast truck. Due for delivery in April 2010, the truck is a joint project between Sky, Telegenic and Sony to produce a next generation outside broadcast vehicle for live content production in 3D. The order is to help BSkyB fulfil its growing 3D sports coverage. The channel has said 3D sports coverage will begin rolling out in UK pubs in April, with sets from LG, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony expected to hit the high street this summer.

Panasonic has already announced its TX-P65VT20E 65in 3D-capable plasma TV, offering 600Hz technology and a 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Sony will also introduce its Bravia 3D LCD range this year and there are rumours that a 3D OLED screen could be on its way sometime in 2011.
