Southampton City Council has launched an Assessment for Learning project, and will give all its students in the city’s 77 primary and secondary schools access to Promethean’s ActivExpression response systems.
The scheme, which is a UK first, is being funded by a Harnessing Technology grant from Becta, and 90 sets of the handheld learning devices will be supplied by Promethean channel partner, Matrix.
In line with the Government’s personalised learning and assessment agendas, ActivExpression features an alphanumeric keypad which allows learners to text individual or team responses to a range of questions – from multiple choice to ‘open’ questions.
Daryl Misselbrook, e-Learning consultant for Southampton City Council, said: ‘We wanted to implement a technology that could offer students a more differentiated and personalised learning experience; to improve the formative and summative assessment capability in our schools; and to enable improved engagement levels of all learners regardless of their abilities.’
ActivExpression systems will be rolled out to primary and secondary schools throughout Southampton in the 2010 spring term.
