Sony partner HoloVis has provided Cardiff University with Wales’ first virtual environment radiotherapy training facility.
Using Sony 4K SXRD projectors to create a life-size virtual reality environment, the system provides 3D images of both patients and treatment machines, allowing students to gain hands-on experience of using treatment machines in a safe environment.
The system is billed as a cost-effective alternative to training in clinical environments. It allows students to gain confidence in using the equipment prior to real clinical practice.
The ‘virtual environment suite’ uses two Sony SRX-S105 4K resolution projectors, in a HoloVis OptiRig precision projector alignment rig, to provide 3D images of both a patient and a linear accelerator treatment machine which are beamed on to the HoloVis ApolloWal 5×2.7m screen.
The suite simulates the effects of doses of radiation on different organs and tissue with pinpoint accuracy in relation to where the treatment is exactly administered on the virtual patient’s body.
