Sky 3D TV launched in April with pub trials to begin immediately

BSkyB has announced its 3D channel, called Sky 3D, will launch is April. The channel will also begin trialling the technology, showing football games in pubs across the country, beginning on Jan 31 with the Arsenal vs Manchester United match.
Sky 3D works with all existing Sky+HD boxes and will initially be introduced at no extra cost for customers. Sky 3D will also be compatible with all 3D Ready TVs coming to the UK and Ireland this year, including all models from Sony, Samsung, LG and Panasonic.
Sky Sports will produce two edits of its live coverage of Sunday’s game at the Emirates Stadium, one for its HD channel feed and another for 3D. Specially engineered 3D camera rigs will house Sky’s HD cameras, to provide stereoscopic coverage from all angles.
Sky will not name the pubs involved in the trial on Jan 31, butit has revealed that four in London, two in Manchester, with one each in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Dublin.
The broadcaster has also announced a 10 per cent growth in revenue in the six months to the end of December 2009. It signed up 482,000 households to its Sky+ HD service in that period, a 156 per cent year-on-year increase.
