BSkyB will launch the first 3D TV channel in Europe in 2010, it will be available to customers with Sky+ HD set-top boxes, which are capable of broadcasting 3D services. However, viewers will need a ’3D ready’ TV to watch the channel, as well as a pair of 3D glasses. 3D TVs are expected to be on the market in the next 12 months or so.

BSkyB has doubled the number of customers with Sky+ HD boxes in the last year to 1.31m, and has said it will broadcast movies, entertainment and sport on the channel.

Sky has already trialled the 3D concept, showing a live concert of Keane performing from Abbey Road Studios in April.

’3D is a genuinely ‘seeing is believing’ experience, making TV come to life as never before. Just like the launch of digital, Sky+ and HD, this is latest step in our commitment to innovating for customers,’ said Sky’s customer group managing director Brian Sullivan.
