Sony unveiled a range of flat screens and surround sounds systems at a recent London demo show but the star of the event was the company’s 11in OLED TV.

The 3cm thick display has a contrast range and colour gamut far in excess of anything currently available from either LCD or plasma technologies. According to Sony, its OLED screens have a contrast ratio of more than 1,000,000:1.

For the time being Sony has no plans to bring larger OLED displays to market, citing production issues and cost as the two principal reasons for not venturing beyond 11in. The manufacturer is also not shipping the OLED units into the UK with just the USA and Japan currently taking delivery. In these territories the TVs retail for £2,500.
