BAA is to install Panasonic plasma screens in all its UK airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick and Edinburgh.
The contract is for up to 1,000 plasma displays over a three-year period with a support package for five years.
The 42 and 50-inch displays will be used for flight information, but in the future may be used for commercial purposes. Screens have also been used at Edinburgh and Heathrow for internal monitoring and presentation purposes. Gatwick’s South Terminal was recently equipped with 12 screens in two videowalls and Heathrow’s Terminal Three is next to benefit.
BAA’s IT, engineering and supply chain representatives conducted a year’s market research into manufacturers’ product quality and support packages. Panasonic was chosen for the picture, colour and brightness quality of its product and, just as important, its project management capabilities. Japanese factory engineers were flown to the UK to talk about BAA about its requirements, which were for a standard product capable of performing in different airport environments.
Each unit will be supplied fully tested and adapted for installation, with associated computer hardware and software technology that will be integrated with existing and future airport systems.
The 42 and 50-inch screens both feature Panasonic’s Black Drive System, which provides deeper, richer blacks.
