Now in its eighth year, ISE continues to defy exhibition market trends and is set for another record-breaking year in Amsterdam. Paul Milligan picks out the best exhibitors and seminars to see when you are there.
This year’s ISE sees the event continue with its year-on-year growth since the inaugural event in Geneva in 2004. The show has become so big in fact that ISE has signed to stay in Amsterdam for the next five years as the organisers felt no other European city could cope with the exhibition space/hotel requirements the show now requires.
ISE 2011 welcomed 715 exhibitors across 26,650 net square metres of floor space and a record attendance of 34,870 – an amazing 22 per cent increase on 2010, and the highest attendance achieved by any standalone AV tradeshow anywhere in the world. Exhibitors numbers also recorded double-digit growth, up 11 per cent on 2010. The show has overtaken its US sister exhibition, InfoComm, in all but net square floor space now.
Onsite exhibitor rebookings at ISE 2011 saw 102 per cent of its floor plan being reserved. This has led ISE to add Hall 7 to the 2011 layout, making this the biggest ISE show ever.
The keynote speech this year will be from Gerhard Schulz, senior VP Central Europe, Ingram Micro, who will give his vision on how the electronic systems integration community can respond to the challenges posed by the transition from analogue to digital. Called Blueprint for Business Growth in the Digital Age, Schulz will demonstrate how Ingram Micro, the world’s largest technology distributor, has expanded its portfolio to become not just a supplier of products but a valued partner to manufacturers, integrators and resellers throughout the world.
The keynote speech will begin at 6:00pm on 30 January, allowing delegates from ISE’s four pre-show conferences to attend when their respective programmes have finished.
Conferences
This year the show is offering even more than the usual three days of exhibition, with four separate conferences held the day before, including the introduction of a brand new conference called Dynamic Events. Organised by Mondiale Publishing in association with the company’s international magazines TPi and mondo*dr, Dynamic Events is dedicated to the use of lighting, sound, video and staging technologies in large-scale entertainment and sporting environments. The 2012 edition will focus on international ceremonies which receive a global televised audience and which, because of their scale, their need for creative innovation and their mission-critical nature, pose particular challenges to the event community.
The keynote speech at Dynamic Events is from Rich Birch, widely regarded as an expert on Olympic Games ceremonies. His credentials are certainly impressive in that regard. Birch was executive producer for the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies in 1992 at Barcelona, in 2000 for Sydney, in 2006 for the Torino Winter Olympics and was international artistic advisor for the 2008 Beijing Olympic opening and closing ceremonies.
The one day conference incorporates three sessions in the day, examining and discussing current themes aimed at both the technology and use of equipment in these environments. The sessions will operate as a panel discussion, allowing different opinions and ideas to be discussed and analysed with an audience Q&A at the end of every panel.
The theme for the inaugural conference will focus on international productions, in particular the opening and closing ceremonies of major sporting events. Due to the nature of the events that are covered, these ceremonies incorporate the latest technologies such as LED lighting, video screens and audio networking.
The conference is aimed at companies and individuals involved in events of this nature and also international organising committees from future games. The conference will cover the challenges faced with producing an event that is time sensitive and a one off experience which also must incorporate cultural differences. The audio session is moderated by pro-audio stalwart Jerry Gilbert, with the video and projection session moderated by XL Video’s Lee Spencer, and Artistic Licence’s Wayne Howell moderating the lighting session.
DiSCO, the digital signage conference is now in its fourth year. For 2012, the format of the DiSCO conference will be slightly different, in that it will see presentations alternating between the story as told by the user – focusing on the concept, issues and solutions – and the view of the supplier or manufacturer who will provide the perspective from ‘the other side’, looking at the technologies and products that were the platform for the solution.
A joint venture between ISE, its signage industry partner invidis consulting and the trade association OVAB Europe, DiSCO will take place the day prior to ISE.
Now in its second year, the InfoComm Future Trends Summit will cover a variety of topics, from the latest in displays to network bandwidth challenges to using cloud computing and more. The day-long conference (on Jan 30) includes presentations from Bob Simpson, founding director of Electrosonic on future high resolution electronic displays, and writer Bob Snyder on AV and IT.
Held offsite this year, at the NH Barbizon Palace in Amsterdam, the two-day (30 Jan-1 Feb) Wainhouse Research Collaboration Summit will discuss all the very latest in video conferencing, unified communications and telepresence. The programme will explore all aspects of collaboration products and services, the benefits provided, and the deployment challenges ahead.
With more than 715 exhibitors expected at this year’s ISE, it will take a very dedicated individual to see them all, so here is our selection of just a few of the manufacturers on display that are worth your time.

The panning motion follows the instructor as they walk around the presentation area of the classroom.
AutoTrak 2.0 eliminates the need for a staff person to operate a camera in a classroom to follow the instructor as they conduct class. Included with AutoTrak 2.0 is Vaddio’s professional grade wireless audio system. The unidirectional microphone, built into the lanyard, features an HD wireless link for interference-free operation and full frequency spectrum audio.

1200-1300 AV & IT in the Zettabyte era
Speaker Bob Snyder
As video usage increases, the average monthly IP traffic in 2014 will be equivalent to 32 million people streaming Avatar in 3D continuously for an entire month. We’re approaching the zettabyte era, which is one way of saying: Video, once the exclusive realm of video specialists, is going mainstream. Video, more and more, is becoming synonymous with IP and a part of nearly every major IT networking experience. In this presentation, Bob Snyder shares insight on how this technology shift will affect the commercial business of integration in IT and AV.
